Counteracting Machismo Through Music
Inspired by Shakira's song "Bizarrap #52" (For Guys Like You), the artist reflects in a video on feminism in Latin America, within the context of gender violence prevalent in this region.
Shakira separated from her partner of 10 years and father of her children, Gerard Pique. The separation happened in the year 2022. According to tabloids, Shakira found out her partner was cheating on her and she decided to break up, and later, give her a piece of her mind - in a sensationally public way!Break-ups have been a source of inspiration for songwriting since the dawn of time. But why has this particular song caused such a stir in Latin America in the year 2023? Because it has touched a nerve by denouncing and rejecting the mainstream ideology of machismo.
”Women no longer cry, they get paid” has become the anthem for millions of Latin American women. They have found in Shakira a voice that sings on their behalf. As expected, machistas have reacted loudly, accusing Shakira of singing out of spite and labeling those who resonate with the message as ‘scorned women’.The fact that the song has generated such positive and negative reactions may signify that the door has been opened for a new type of contract between men and women. The old machista contract has become obsolete and a new one needs to be drawn.
Shakira se separó de su pareja de 10 años y padre de sus hijos, Gerard Piqué. La separación tuvo lugar en el año 2022. Según los tabloides, Shakira descubrió que su pareja le estaba siendo infiel y decidió poner fin a la relación, y más tarde, expresar su opinión de manera sensacionalmente pública.
Las rupturas amorosas han sido una fuente de inspiración para la composición de canciones desde tiempos inmemoriales. Pero ¿por qué esta canción en particular ha causado tanto revuelo en América Latina en el año 2023? Porque ha tocado una fibra sensible al denunciar y rechazar la ideología predominante del machismo.
"Las mujeres ya no lloran, pasan factura" se ha convertido en el himno de millones de mujeres latinoamericanas. Han encontrado en Shakira una voz que canta en su nombre. Como era de esperar, los machistas han reaccionado enérgicamente, acusando a Shakira de cantar por despecho y etiquetando a quienes se identifican con el mensaje como "mujeres despechadas".
El hecho de que la canción haya generado reacciones tan positivas como negativas podría indicar que se ha abierto la puerta para un nuevo tipo de contrato entre hombres y mujeres.
El antiguo contrato machista se ha vuelto obsoleto y es necesario establecer uno nuevo.
